I think after all these years I might have finally found a belated explanation for my occasional fits of explosive, defiant, hooligan behaviour, now relegated more to the inner recesses of my thoughts, courtesy of a modicum of maturity and self control.
Everyone likes to tell you that if you are feeling sad, or angry, or in pain, you still should put on a smile. It’s true. And it works. The only problem is if you put on the smile so often that people forget you are actually capable of experiencing those emotions, that you may actually be in pain. So they inflict more pain. And it hurts the most when the people closest to you do it.
So smile, I do.
